18/05/2013  Southern Athletics League - St Ives  details

At the second Southern Athletics League meet of the season, Huntingdonshire AC clinically took apart the opposition with possibly its greatest-ever team performance. A record 42 men and women turned out for this home match, placing first in a staggering 30 events, winning the meet by almost 40 points and setting four club records. The oldest record to fall was the men?s 4x100m relay. Although equalled last year by a junior team, the original record has stood for 20 years and was set by a team of four black American sprinters (Ty Davis, L. Ferrell, M. Smith, K. Tyler) who worked at the local USAF base, RAF Alconbury. With excellent changeovers between Yann Yao, Fred Williams, Tom Johnson and Ryan Palmer, they won the race by almost 10 meters, knocking 0.1 secs off the old record which is quite an accomplishment for a team with an average age of 19 years (with Fred just 16 years old). Ryan and Tom had warmed up nicely for this record-breaking run by winning the A string 100m and 400m, respectively. The next record to fall was in the women?s 1500m where Maggie Mulholland reduced her own veteran?s record by over six seconds. Maggie has now improved the record by over half a minute since she joined the club this year. The third and fourth records to go was by the same person in the same race. Eighteen-year-old Eleanor Smith covered the 2000m steeplechase in 8:42.2 to slash over half a minute from her own junior record and 12 seconds from the senior record. This was Eleanor?s third race of the day, previously running in the 3000m and 1500m. Competing for Hunts AC for the first time, 17-year-old Lauri Watt made quite an impact by winning the long jump by almost half a metre with the furthest distance by a club member in the past six years. Exceeding even that, Lauri won the 100m hurdles by five seconds in 16.0 secs which is the best at Hunts AC since 2004. Along with Lily Seach, Holly Addis and Laurel Phelan, Lauri was also part of the victorious 4x100m relay team. Laurel Phelan had only received her doctor?s approval to compete that morning and took full advantage by winning the high jump with the best height at the club in the past seven years. Laurel also won the B string 200m to gain a trio of first places. Based on an intricate points system developed by league officials, Jonathan Edwards scored the highest out of all athletes present and would have won the Male Athlete of the Meet award. However, Jonathan won it at the last meet and the rules don?t allow more than one win a year. Therefore, the award went to the next highest scorer who also turned out to be from Hunts AC. For his 49.7-second 400m win (by 25 meters), Tom Johnson duly received this accolade. However, Jonathan gained some satisfaction by totally crushing his opponents in the throwing events. He won the shot putt by 3.44 metres, the discus by 19 metres and the hammer throw by 32 meters! With a second and a first place finish in the first two meets, Hunts AC move up from 8th to 3rd in the league standings. The next league meet will be another home match on 15 June.

  • 12/05/2013  East Anglian League - Luton  details

At the first East Anglian League meet of the season at Luton, Hunts AC declared its intent to qualify as many teams as possible for the Finals in September at Bury St Edmunds. Top of the bunch was the Under 13 Boys team, led by Team Manager Sharron Kenyon, as the athletes romped to an impressive 20-point victory over the second-place team. Although with only one A string win through Joshua Rathjen in the 75m hurdles, along with three B string victories with Alex Ensor also in the sprint hurdles, Jake Balaam in the javelin and Oliver Pocklington in the 800m, the team performed consistently across all 11 events to secure the team win. The Under 13 Girls team finished just four points behind winners Chelmsford AC with a hat-trick of A string first places. In the 70m hurdles, Nicole Covell ran out a comfortable winner, while Harriet Bruce beat the rest of the field in the high jump by a huge 15 cms. Harriet also took first in the B string long jump. The third A string winner, Frannie Chapman, putt the shot out 39 cms in front of her nearest rival. The Under 15 Boys were under strength due to other commitments, but still performed admirably by claiming the second spot in the team competition. Similarly, the Under 15 Girls lacked the numbers required to make an impact but hope to increase their numbers for the remaining meets in order to gain qualification to the Finals. In this age group, Francesca Worrall, who usually focuses on middle distance events, managed to pick up the win in the B string javelin. A few seniors also competed with Christian Roberts winning the 400m by four seconds and Andy Dobson smashing the opposition in the 800m by over six seconds.
